In March, 1864, hejoined General Butler in Virginia, and in the followingmonth took part in the battle of Drurys Bluff. OnJuly 4, 1864, he was appointed brigadier-general ofvolunteers, and led a division of colored troops in theattack of New Market, Va., Sept. 29, 1864. He partici-pated in the capture of Fort Fisher in January, CHARLES J PAINE Subsequently he served under General Sherman inNorth Carolina, and after the surrender of Lee com-manded the district of Newbern. He was brevettedmajor-general of volunteers for his services at FortFisher, and on Jan. 15, 1866, was mustered out of theservice. General Paine from earliest boyhood took anardent interest in yachting, and became a master ofyacht designing and sailing. In 1877 he purchased the Halcyon, and so improved her that she became one of the fastest sailingcraft of her kind,ranking with theGrayling andMontauk. In1885 General Paineformed the syndicatethat built the Puri-tan, and also servedat the head of thecommitteewhich hadcharge of her duringthe races of theyear. Later he be-came sole owner ofthe Puritan, butsoon after sold herto CommodoreForbes. In 1886he built the May-flower, which de-feated the Galatea,and, in
