Blue sky white clouds view, to Berlin Social Court, roadworks, building site, Invalidenstrasse at Berlin Central Railway Station

Berlin Central Railway Station is a monumental glass structure, which opened in May 2006, across the River Spree, north of the New German Chancellery Building. It is the biggest station in the European high-speed railway network. Platforms at several levels are served by S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains. The area around the station is being re-developed. Here we see building works and roadworks along Invalidenstrasse, at the northern side of the station. Groundwater, on average, is only 2 m below the surface in Berlin, so, when new building work starts, impeding groundwater needs to be drained out off the foundation pit. In the background, blue pipes crossing Invalidenstrasse drain groundwater from the building site on the right . In the background of the shot rises the German Social Court Building. This was originally the administrative building of the Berlin-Hamburg Railway.
