Zojoji Temple is one of Tokyo's major temples. In the southwest part of the temple grounds, now part of Shiba Park, remains the strolling pond garden Benten Pond. In front of Hojuin Temple to the west of Zojoji Temple, Benten Pond was once a famous spot from the Edo period until modern times. Zozoji Benten Pond may not give the impression of being a garden but with its small waterfall, natural stone embankment, and plantings of maples, azaleas and azaleas, it has a Japanese garden feel. Benten Pond was once connected to the stream of Momiji Valley, now across the street.
