The disastrous fire of 1860 that closed Liverpool Sailors' Home, for two years. Built in Canning Place, it provided safe, inexpensive lodging for sailors, along with educational and recreational opportunities. It also played a pivotal role in establishing Liverpool as one of the world's successful commercial seaports following the dismantling of the Slave trade.
