An old engraving of steam locomotive designed for use in mines. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This American engine, Baldwin’s direct acting locomotive, worked on a gauge of 2 feet 6 ins and burnt coke or anthracite for fuel. A mine railway (or mine railroad or pit railway), is a railway constructed to carry materials and workers in and out of a mine. At first on of wood rails, but eventually adding protective iron, waggons were hauled by men (and children) or horse and donkey. Sometimes steam locomotion by fixed engines outside the mine.
