An early 20th century American Puck Magazine illustration of Rudyard Kipling holding a pen labelled "Criticism" which he is using as a prod to get the British Lion moving in a particular direction. In a 1902 poem, The Rowers, Kipling attacked the Kaiser as a threat to Britain and called for an Anglo-French alliance to stop Germany.
