In many instances, personsemigrating from one country to another areinfluenced by circumstances, and changetheir ecclesiastical connections in accordancewith their convenience; but a Scotchmancarries his Presbyterianism with him, and ifhe finds no associates, he makes them. So was it in the case beforeus ; but in order to have a clear understanding of our subject, we mustgo back to Scotland and look at events in the seventeenth century. In that time of reformation, one of the evils complained of was thelaw of patronage, or the power of public bodies or individuals to pre-sent ministers to churches without the consent of the people.
