Tower of the Porta San Gervasio or Porta dell’Annuziata, a medieval gateway in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, completed in 1255 and one of the original entrances in Lucca’s 13th century city walls.

Lucca, Tuscany, Italy: semi-circular sandstone and limestone tower of the Porta San Gervasio or Porta dell’Annunziata (Annunciation Gate), completed in 1255 and now a private residence in Via del Fosso or Fossi. The tower has lost its crenellation but survives as a reminder of Lucca’s medieval walls that were largely demolished when Renaissance ramparts were built to further strengthen the city’s defences. The Porta San Gervasio was one of the gateways in the medieval city walls of Lucca. This gateway is now within a larger area encircled by Renaissance city walls constructed in the 1500s and 1600s.
