The Superintendent of Missions in the Buncombe Associationis loved, respected and followed as he seeks to enlarge the visionof our churches. North Carolina Baptists are greater, stronger andstill growing, because Erskine V. Plemmons, his wife and threechildren are living and serving. JAMES CARTER PIPES The 8th day of February, 1897 was a significant day for NorthCarolina Baptists. On this day, James Carter Pipes was born ina modest rural home in Wilkes County, North Carolina. The familylater moved to Cherokee County where he was ordained in 1916. The voice that was first heard in Wilkes County was destinedto be heard throughout the beautiful mountains of Western NorthCarolina. There were several churches in North and South Caro-lina and Tennessee that were blessed by the ministry of this dedi-cated son of the hills. He was indeed a man to match our Moun-tains. In the churches where he served as pastor unusual growth wasexperienced. This new life discovered in the churches where heserved caught the eye of the North Carolina Baptist State Conven-tion. A new chapter in the life of James Carter Pipes began with hiselection to Field Secretary in 1937. Because of the zeal and abilityof
