Neuroretinitis and optic disc oedema. Fundus photograph of the interior surface of the eye of a patient affected by macular neuroretinitis and optic disc oedema. The optic disc (centre right) is the point at the back of the eye where nerve cells leave the eye and become the optic nerve, which transmits visual information to the brain. Oedema is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in tissues. Neuroretinitis is an inflammation of the optic nerve and macula (centre left) - the area of the retina that contains the highest density of rod and cone cells.
