VAN HOVEN-BERG, of Paterson, a leadingmember of the bar, was born inNew York City, November 13,1848, son of Martin H. R. andMary Teresa (OConnor) Van Hovenberg. It issupposed that the Van Hovenberg Family originatedin Switzerland, thence emigrating to Holland. Fromthe latter country it was transplanted to America atan early period of colonial history. Its progenitor inthis country was a clergyman of the Dutch ReformedChurch, who settled at Kingston, N. Y. Mr. Van Hovenbergs grandfather. Dr. Henry. DIEDRICH HEXXIGER ONY AND AS A STATE 267 Van Hovenberg, was born at Kingston, Ulster Coun-ty, N. Y., was graduated in medicine, and removed toNew York City, where he engaged in practice andbecame one of the most prominent physicians of histimes. He had charge of Bellevue Hospital and theCharity Hospital on Blackwells Island, and served ashealth officer of the Port of New York. During theWar of 18 12 he was a surgeon in the army. He wasa conspicuous member of the Democratic party in themetropolis. Dr. Van Hovenberg married a daughterof General Martin Hermance, and had three childrenborn to him, of whom Martin H. R. was the eldest. Martin H. R. Van Hovenberg, father of the sub-ject of this sketch, was born in Kingston, N. Y., in1814. He was educated at the New York University,and studied law and practiced his profession in NewYork for many years. From 1853 to 1859 he residedin Baltimore, where he owned and conducted a
