THE DOMESTIC ORDERS When the extraordinary- conditions of the locomotivemarket, both as to prices and deliveries, existing duringthe greater part of 1917 are considered, there is nothingunexpected in a falling off in the number of orders placedfor locomotives for domestic use during 1917 as compared. The Mikado, Santa Fe, Mallet, Consolidation and Mogul Type Locomotives Shown Graphically In Per Cents of the Total Domestic Locomotives Ordered. with 191(1. Ilic significance of this reduction so far as itapplies to the railroads, however, is more apparent thanreal. The reduction has faken place largely in the numberof locomotives ordered for industrial use and the lighter types-for railroad service. There is an actual increase in the num-l;er of locomotives of several of the heavier types for whichorders have Itccn placed.
