MODEL RELEASED. Egg harvesting at an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) clinic. Prior to egg harvesting the patient is given hormonal injections to stimulate the growth of more than one egg during her monthly cycle. The best time to harvest the eggs is then determined by measuring levels of hormones and the size of the egg- bearing follicles. A trans-vaginal scanner (not seen) is used to view the position of the eggs in the patient's abdomen. A needle is then inserted through the vagina and cervix, and a suction device is used to collect the eggs into the needle. The eggs will then be artificially inseminated and returned to the woman's womb (uterus).
