The list of shipments over long distances fromthe San Joaquin Valley includes oranges, grapefruit,lemons, fancy table grapes, plums, peaches, apricots,pears, persimmons, pomegranates, nectarines, figs,water melons, turkish melons, cantaloupes, etc.,some shippers having their entire crop contractedfor by single concerns in the extreme East, whilea great many of the melon shipments go north intoOregon and 400-hp. motor driving duplex ammonia compressor at Fresno Valley IcePlant. Refrigeration Cars for Fruit Products The largest single industrial consumer on thesystem of the San Joaquin Light & Power Corpora-tion is the Valley Ice Company, of which Mr. J. is general manager, and which operates itslargest plant at Fresno, one at Bakersfield andanother at Modesto. The bulk of the product is usedin refrigerating fruit cais. The plants are located on the railroad main lines,the one at Fresno lying between the Southern Pacificand Santa Fe tracks, where they closely paralleleach other. Sidings from each have been constructedalong the loading rack from which the cakes of iceare pushed into the hoppers of the refrigeratingcars.
