For the ice-capjourney one of these wheels was fitted in a light frame and attached to the rearof the sledge. It worked well and proved invaluable. The White March 281 snow-shoes and ski strapped on, and everything inreadiness for a start, I stepped out to the front withthe Httle silken guidon my wife made for me in myhand, and took the proper course, while Astriiptramped along beside the sledge, keeping each dogup to his work. In the event of an accident, ortrouble with the dogs, we both worked to straightenthings out. Peary. Cook. Astriip. PACKING. We had to get into harness ourselves and help thedogs haul almost invariably after a fresh fall of snow, and also during the climb up the slope of the ice-cap, both from McCormick Bay and IndependenceBay. At these times, a long walrus-hide line was runout from the front of the sledge over the dogs, sothat I could attach It to my shoulders and pull whilestill keeping in advance of the team. Astriip, with ashort line attached to the side of the sledge, was able 282 Northward over the Great Ice to pull and at the same time attend to the came to the rescue in this way during about tendays of the entire trip.
