Cristo Redentor is an art deco statue depicting Jesus Christ located on top of Corcovado Hill, 709 meters above sea level, in Tijuca National Park, overlooking most of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2007, it was informally elected as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. In 2012, UNESCO considered Christ the Redeemer as part of the landscape of Rio de Janeiro included in the list of World Heritage Sites. The monument was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and built in collaboration with French sculptor Paul Landowski and compatriot engineer Albert Caquot, between 1922 and 1931, in France, due to the French thinking that Brazilians had no experience. to build the statue. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1931, the day of Nossa Senhora Aparecida and is located in the Alto da Boa Vista neighborhood. Symbol of Brazilian Christianity, the statue became an icon of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is thirty meters tall, not counting the eight meters of the plinth, and its arms stretch for 28 meters in width. The statue weighs 1145 tons and is the third largest sculpture of Christ in the world, smaller only than the Statue of Christ the King of Świebodzi in Poland (the largest sculpture of Christ in the world) and Cristo de la Concordia in Bolivia (the second largest sculpture of Christ in the world).
