Mount Ararat in Turkey, seen from Armenia


Mount Ararat, where it is thought Noah's Ark came to rest, once in Armenia. is now in Turkey although it remains a powerful symbol for Armenians. An Armenian Orthodox church and monastery are in the foreground. The border between the two countries was closed in 1993. In 2009, talks were under way between Turkey and Armenia on establishing diplomatic relations and re-opening the border.
