The nest island south of importance isJohns Island, and the next Edisto Island. Be-tween these and Hilton Head are a number ofislands of mucli less size. Early in May ordered the channel of Stono River tobe sounded out and buoys to be placed. Thiswas completed on the 20th of May, and thegnnboats Unadilla, Pembina, and Ottawa crossedthe bar and entered the river.
