Vintage portrait of American boxer James J Corbett (1866 - 1933) - World Heavyweight Champion from 1892 to 1897. Corbett, nicknamed "Gentleman Jim", "Pompadour Jim" and "Handsome Jim", is sometimes referred to as the "Father of Modern Boxing" because of the scientific techniques he brought to the ring. He won the World Heavyweight Championship when he knocked out the legendary John L Sullivan in New Orleans on September 7 1892 but lost the crown on March 17 1897 when he was knocked out by Bob Fitzsimmons in Carson City, Nevada. Corbett later tried to regain the title in two fights with Jim Jeffries (who dethroned Fitzsimmons in 1899) but was stopped by Jeffries in both 1900 and 1903. During his boxing career Corbett also appeared on the stage in theatrical plays and after retiring from the ring he returned to acting on both the stage and in films. Portrait circa 1894 by The Strobridge Lithographing Company.
