Phycologia britannica, or, A History of British sea-weeds, containing coloured figures, generic and specific characters, synonymes, and descriptions of all the species of algae inhabiting the shores of the British Islands . erecta, , and E. ramulosa are but different states of one species ;and may now add that E. Still,as the plants which have received these names present very diffe-rent aspects, and from their size cannot be presented in the sameplate, it is my intention to give separate figures and descriptionsof all of them, and then to leave it to the judgment of botanistswhether to adopt the notion of one protean species, or of manyless variable, but still anastomosing species, or, more properly, races. E. erecta is one of the most beautiful forms, particularly whendredged in deeper water than comes within the usual tide are the specimens represented in our plate, which weredredged in Torbay. In these the ramuli are even more featherythan the figure exhibits. Fig. 1. Enteromorpha erecta:—natural size. 2. A branch:— Portion of the membrane :—highly magnified. Plate t* fSicWn ii Ser.
