Illustration of the Great Dust Heap on the location of what is now Kings Cross Station, London, UK. The heap consisted of cinders and ashes from domestic fires and household rubbish. Scavengers would take any items that could be sold, but the real value was in the cinders, which could be used for bricks and building materials. The heap was sold to the Russian government in 1826 to help rebuild Moscow. Watercolour painting by E. H. Dixon (1837).
