The march up to Big Bethel, in the cool of the nightand morning, in the excitement of a first march into battle,and in the confidence of victory, had been a not unpleasantexperience. The return, in the dust and heat of a Southernsummer day, in the exhaustion of hunger and the depressionof defeat, was a different thing.
