'Jahrhundertschritt' or The-century stage is a bronze statue by Wolfgang Mattheuer


The-century stage is a bronze statue by Wolfgang Mattheuer made in 1984. The work is the era of critical realism assigned. The gestures in this figure has an obvious historical background. The right hand is the Hitler salute , clenched his left hand into a fist. Mattheuer painted on his left arm also a red ribbon as a symbol of the working class . Hitler salute and workers fist two characters for two totalitarian ideologies, which as fascism in Germany (Nazism) or communism had to live through not only the Germans in succession. Two dictatorships of the last century, who failed to complete their claim to the people meet. Both trapped in a body, what this shows through the crack in the chest, threatening to burst. It symbolizes the struggle of ideologies in their opposition and their totalitarian parallel with the physical and psychological consequences for the people of this century.
