Polar vortex and North American cold wave, 2019. Goddard Earth Observing System (GOES) model of the air temperature over the Arctic, the surrounding regions, and North America. White is zero degrees Celsius, with darkening red colours showing warmer temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, and darkening blue colours showing colder temperatures down to minus 40 degrees Celsius. The displacement of the polar vortex (an area of low pressure over the North Pole) has caused record low temperatures in the USA in the January 2019 North American cold wave. Large amounts of snow and record low temperatures were recorded. This image shows the air temperatures on 29 January 2019.
