Restoration of the State Dining Room ceiling at Stowe House, Buckinghamshire, England, United Kingdom. Picture shows Harriet Sharman, conservator, working on the restoration of the State Dining Room ceiling at Stowe House. Conservation work began in January with cleaning of the gilded framework and trials to find the best method for redecorating the cove. Flaking paint is being re attached before cleaning. Conservators are cleaning, stabilising loose plaster, filling cracks and re-decorating. The ceiling was painted in 1750, we believe by Francesco Sleter, a Venetia artist who was active in Britain between 1719 and 1760. It depicts four mythological scenes surrounded by various animals, birds and reptiles. Stowe House have plans to restore the rest of the room to its appearance in 1817, which is when the large octagonal paintings in the centre of the ceiling were replaced. The Stowe House Preservation Trust (SHPT) is currently fundraising to be able to achieve this.
