A photograph of a basal cell carcinoma BCC on the face This is a malignant tumour of the epithelium that begins as a small bump and enlarges to the side It develops a central crater that erodes crusts and bleeds The tumour rarely spreads to other organs metastasizes but surrounding tissue is destroyed More than 95 of these carcinomas occur in patients over 40 They develop most commonly on sun exposed areas Approximately 85 are found on the head and neck area and the remaining 15 on the trunk and limbs
