Kinetochore bound to centromere protein, illustration

Illustration of a human inner kinetochore bound to a centromere protein A (CENP-A) nucleosome. The centromere is the point at which the two sister chromatids of a chromosome meet when condensed for nuclear division (mitosis or meiosis). The kinetochore is a protein complex that connects the centromere to the microtubules that separate the chromatids during nuclear division. It is therefore essential for the successful separation of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) during cell division.
