Time in days between moults measured for seven broods. than the adult female. This does not appear on the graph since detailed studies in this case did not go beyond the eighth instar. C. Grozvth of the antennae Newly-hatched Hyalellas have six joints in the first antenna. The three proxi- mal joints constitute the peduncle, and the distal three the flagellum. During the process of growth the number of peduncular joints remains constant while the flagellum develops four to six new joints. The actively growing region ("growth center") is the first proximal joint of the flagellum. Growth can readily be studied through the series of moults from any one animal. A number of series were studied.
