Cancer research. Image 1 of 2. Normal cells. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a normal cell culture for comparison with precancerous cells (see M133/146). The cells have been grown in a petri dish in a laboratory as part of research into the causes of cancer. Here, the structure is regular and healthy. Scanned in the Health and Pollutants Laboratory of the INRS (the French National Institute of Research and Safety), Nancy, France. Tests are carried out here to establish the toxicity and cancer-causing properties of different materials, chemicals and pollutants.
