Queen Anne House, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York
This exceptional example of a QueenAnne/shingle-style house was constructed in 1887-88 in the Stapleton Heights section of Staten Island. The residence was designed by Hugo Kafka for the firm of Kafka & Lindenmeyer. It was built by brewer George Bechtel (1840–89) as a wedding present for his daughter Anna (1867–99) upon her marriage to glass manufacturer Leonard Weiderer (d. 1891). Unfortunately, Bechtel was dead within two years. Weiderer succumbed to tuberculosis within three years. Anna moved to Germany, remarried, but was dead by 1899. Anna's sister, Agnes Bechtel, lived in the house until 1928. She married Edward C. Wagner in 1897. It is in an official New York City landmarked district.
