ABDOMEN, ANATOMY

Model of the intern anatomy of the trunk of an asexual adult human body, face on. At the thoracic level, the heart withdrawal makes visible the esophagus (in reddish brown), coming down between both lungs. The esophagus emerges in the abdominal cavity, where the deep organs appear here because of the withdrawal of the liver, the gallblader and the stomach. The adrenal glands (in orange, in the background) lies on top of each kidney (in burgundy, of which only the superior areas are discernible here). Located below the right adrenal gland, the duodenum (in nude), first segment of the small intestine, is visible in section. The pancreas (in orange) is located at its left. The Wirsung's duct (in white) goes across the pancreas to empy pancreatic juice into the small intestine. The splenic artery (in red) branches from the celiac trunk, which emerges from the abdominal aorta; it irrigates the pancreas and the spleen (in plum), located sideways, on the abdominal wall. Below the pancreas is the transverse mesocolon (in nude), a fold of the peritoneum. It binds the transverse colon, with which it is coupled, to the posterior abdominal wall. The large intestine (in brown) is composed of the ascending (in the right abdominal side), transverse (horizontally), descending (left abdominal side) and sigmoid (not visible here) colons. Three longitudinal muscle strips, the tenia coli (in red), are present on the transverse colon; they curled up the colon on itself to form bulges. The colon borders the numerous convolutions of the small intestine (in nude). The intestines are covered by the peritoneum (in orange-yellow) for the left half of the body. The stump of the left thigh reveals blood and lymph circulations (vessels in white and nodes in yellow).
