Apostle St James the Great stands looking down at visitors from the apex of the tiled and shingled wooden west porch of the église Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Philippe at Lentilles, in the Pays du Der area of the Aube in Grand Est, France. The church, founded around 1512, is a typical example of the historic half-timbered or timber-framed churches of the Champagne region, with massive oak beams supporting its red-tiled roofs. Wooden shingles also clad the west gable and an octagonal belfry.
Lentilles, Aube, Grand Est, France: a stone statue of patron saint, the Apostle James the Great, stands at the apex of the wood-shingled gable surmounting the west porch of the village's parish church, the église Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Philippe, which dates from 1512 and is considered to be one of the most typical and most beautiful of the historic half-timbered or timber-framed churches in the Champagne region. Behind the saint rises the shingled west gable, with an old wooden clock face framing his head. An octagonal belfry, rising near the east end of the building, is also shingled. The church's slender shape is emphasised by the absence of any transepts and also by the fact that the tiled porch roof is linked to the tiled roofs of the side-aisles. The structure is supported by massive oak timbers, with the interior partly lit by an unusual architectural feature for this area: circular windows or oculi above the bays in the polygonal choir. They retain remnants of original 16th century stained or painted glass created by craftsmen and artists in the workshops of the nearby city of Troyes. The church at Lentilles is a main attraction on the "Route des églises à pans de bois", a signposted tour of 15 villages in the peaceful Pays du Der countryside south of the Lac du Der, all with timber-framed churches, chapels, houses and farms. The religious buildings were constructed between the late-1400s and the 18th century.
