These particles are formed by precipitation of iron in seawater as the re- sult of acid waste dumping. They consti- tute an excellent tracer of suspended sedi- ment circulation. The vertical distribution of suspended sediment shows high values ( mg/liter) near the surface, and mg/ liter in the near-bottom "nepheloid" layer, typical of shelf areas (Fig. 9).
