February 12, 2014 - Starke, Florida, United States - Death penalty supporters demonstrate outside Florida State Prison in Starke on the eve of the execution of Juan Carlos Chavez, convicted in the abduction, rape, killing, and dismemberment of 9-year-old Jimmy Ryce in South Florida in 1995. Following their son's death, Ryce's parents, Don and Claudine Ryce, became advocates for child victims, helping to enact the 1998 Jimmy Ryce Act, which allows the state to indefinitely detain violent sexual predators who have completed their sentences under civil law until they can prove they are rehabilitated. The Ryces also created the non-profit Jimmy Ryce Center for Victims of Predatory Abduction. The killing sparked nationwide efforts to improve searches for missing children, and resulted in an executive order signed by President Bill Clinton permitting missing-child flyers to be posted in federal buildings.
