Scenic view of the harbor with cruise liner ships and the "Matitone" skyscraper (San Benigno Torre Nord), Genoa, Liguria, Italy
The Matitone, a popular nickname meaning literally "big pencil", officially San Benigno North Tower, is a skyscraper designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Mario Lanata and Andrea Messina and finished building in 1992. The name derives from its unique architectural form that makes it resemble, in fact, a large pencil. The octagonal shape was chosen using as inspiration the shape of the bell tower of the church of San Donato located in the historic center of Genoa. It is 109 meters high, divided into 24 floors, and is located opposite the Lantern lighthouse. It is the tallest building in the city, surpassing by a single meter the central Torre Piacentini skyscraper.
