Drill in seed to depth of K inch, at the rate of 4 or 5 pounds to the acre for large Onions; 60 to 80 pounds per acre for Sets, or use Sets at the rati of 6 to 10 bushels to the acre, or start Onion Seeds in frame, under glass, and transplant to open ground 3 inches apart in the row. This excellent plan is often referred to as the "new Onion ; Onions are quite hardy and may be planted early. The soil may be used year after year, without rotation of crops, if well fertilized annually. Winter storage de- mands dryness, coolness, good ventilation and freedom from sudden changes. Spread 18 inches of straw on bam or garret floor, then 6 to 10 inches of Onions; then 2 feet of straw; or keep on shelves in a dry cool cellar. Set large Onions in open ground in September; protect with litter during Winter. 214. White Silver SHin superior stock is almost exclusively used for grow- ing sets, which is the strongest proof that it is the best from which to grow the large white Onions. Its delicate, mild flavor, its stately form and large handsome size, its pure white color, make it a most desirable variety for the table, the most profitable for market and shipping.
