The maintenanceand repair of our defences alone, especially inwinter, entails constant heavy work. Bad weatherand the enemy combine to flood and destroytrenches, dugouts, and communications; all suchdamages must be repaired promptly, under fire, andalmost entirely by night. Artillery and snipers arepractically never silent, patrols are out in front ofthe lines every night, and heavy bombardmentsby the artillery of one or both sides take placedaily in various parts of the line.
