In that portion of thecountry, on the east side of the Mississippi, there were five distinct set-tlements, with their respective villages, viz.: Cahokia, near the mouthof Cahokia Creek and about five miles below the present city of ; St. Philip, about forty-five miles below Cahokia, and four milesabove Fort Chartres; Fort Chartres, twelve miles above Kaskaskia;Kaskaskia, situated on the Kaskaskia River, five miles above its conflu-ence with the Mississippi; and Prairie du Rocher, near Fort these must be added St. Genevieve and St. Louis, on the west sideof the Mississippi. Kaskaskia, in its bestdays, was a town of some two or three thousand inhabitants. After itpassed from the crown of France its population for many years did notexceed fifteen hundred. Under British rule, in 1773, the population haddecreased to four hundred and fifty. As early as 1721, the Jesuits hadestablished a college and a monastery in Kaskaskia. Fort Chartres was first built under the direction of the MississippiCompany, in 1718, by M. de Boisbraint, a military officer, under commandof Bienville. It stood on the east bank of the Mississippi, about eighteenmiles below Kaskaskia, and was for some time the headquarters of themilitary c
