ON CELTIC TUMULI IN EAST KENT. 25 urn from Boscawen-un, in Cornwall, of rather largerdimensions, is very similar in shape.* The name of incense cups has been given tosuch vessels as figs. 4 and 5 on Plate II., but withoutany sufficient reason. One not unlike the ruder of thetwo was found in Dorsetshire filled with small birdsbones, t The other may be compared with two ofthese cups figured in Batemans Ten Years Diggings, jone of which is similarly pierced at the side, and withan almost identical specimen from a Sussex barrow. §It has been conjectiu-ed that these holes were for sus-pension. In the present instance, from the fact thatthe mouth of the cup was covered, and from the bm-ntsubstance inside, it seems more likely that they weremade to allow the escape of smoke, and the admissionof air to a burning substance within. There is a smallcup of Komano-British ware from the Upchurchmarshes in the Geological Museum, in Jermyn
