Centaurus A galaxy (NGC 5128), combined X-ray and ultraviolet image. Most of the stars of the galaxy are not seen, though the far ultraviolet (FUV) of the central dust lane (light blue) is seen. Around this is a larger region of X-ray emission (red). Some stars are emitting near-UV (green), which is less energetic than FUV. The X-ray region shows jets (upper left and lower right) emerging from the galactic centre. The FUV emission shows the edges of the dust lane, where bright, new stars have formed. Centaurus A is about 10 million light years away in the constellation Centaurus. This image was obtained by the GALEX (ultraviolet) and Chandra (X-ray) satellites in 2003.
