Archaeologists working on a "Rescue Site" site soon to be covered by a housing develpoment in Eastbourne East Sussex UK.
This dig, rescue archaeology, took place at Pocock's Field, Eastbourne, East Sussex, UK during the summer of 2014. The land being dug was "relic pasture" that had remained uncultivated possibly for centuries. It lies on the edge of an old salt water lagoon, a known location for a Roman salt works. Previous smaller digs in the area have uncovered hints of pre-historic occupation, Roman and Medieval settlements and a trackway (date unknown.) Pottery, animal bone and ceramic material have all been found. At least one large, possibly Saxon building, has been identified by post holes. A geophysical survey revealed a substantial system of ditches, possibly old enclosure boundaries. The land has been purchased by Bovis Homes for development and hence the race is\was on to excavate the site. Bovis is funding the dig and the visitors' programme. The site is being/was dug by UCL and Archaeology South East.
