These pistols were then taken, and presentedto General Israel Putnam, who used them throughout thewar. At his death they were placed on the drapery of hiscoffin, as he was borne to the grave. They became anheirloom in the Putnam family, and in 1827 were broughtto Lexington, and shown to three members of Company, one of whom, Col. Munroe, recognisedthem from their peculiar construction and ornament, andsaid he saw Major Pitcairn discharge one of them, beforeany other shot was fired. It is, therefore, the first weapon used in formal actionin the Revolutionary war; an additional certificate accom-panies the pistols signed by Colonel Aaron Burr, Aide-de-Camp to General Putn
