The thicknessvaries greatly, reaching sometimes as much as 30 m., though on an averageit is but 8 metres. The quality of the ore also varies considerably ; poor clayey massesof lens- or funnel shape occur in the deposit. The ore consists principallyof loose hmonite, in which patches of pyrolusite, poHanite, wad, andmanganite, occur. The average composition of the ore won is approxi-mately 20 per cent of iron and 20 per cent of manganese, so that it is atypical iron-manganese ore. On the market it is known as Fernie ore afterthe name of the former owner of the mine. VOL. II 2 a to s o.
