Alkaloidal Determination of Cinchona.—H. Ekroos {Arch. d. Pharm.,1898, p. 328) employs KOH in place of ammonia and a freshly prepared solu-tion of hsematoxylin as an indicator. The method, which is also given in ab-stract in Sudd. Apoth. Zeit.^ 1898, p. 649, may be applied to extracts of cinchonaas well as upon the drug. Book Paper Bad for the Eyes.—The effect of glazed papers onthe eyesight has recently occupied the attention of some German doctors. In. XVI Notes and Neivs. {^^ApriMm comparing these papers with those in use in the earlier part of the century,which were mostly of a dull gray or blue color and coarse-grained, requiringthicker type, they point out that the highly glazed surface offers reflections ofthe light which, with the more elaborate and thinner type, produce a lot ofshades and lights that are most trying to the eye. It is, therefore, proposedthat the public inspectors of schools should order the use of sanitary paper forthe eyes, by which it is meant that a glazed or highly polished surface shouldbe avoided, and the colors chosen should rather be gray or light blue, but nowhite, and, in fact, no brilliant colors at all.
