Kochi (Cochin) is the main commerce centre of Kerala, and one of the fastest growing in India. Kochi is a cultural melting pot and a growing centre of information technology and tourism. Kochi was an important spice trading centre and the city retains its distinct colonial heritage from the 14th century onwards. Occupied by the Portuguese in 1503, Kochi was the site of the first European colonial settlement in India. It remained the capital of Portuguese India until 1530, when Goa became the capital. The city was later occupied by the Dutch, Mysore and British The old town is Fort Kochi where there is still a brisk trade in many different spices.
