A text-book of the diseases of the ear for students and practitioners . ympanicwall are recognised by the shining folds extending from theformer margins of the perforation to the inner tympanic wall, and by the blister-like, irregular bulging after an inflation of air CICATRICES OF THE MEMBRANA TYMPANI 393 into the middle ear,* causing the structures which were formerlyvisible on the inner tympanic wall to entirely disappear fromview. The latter procedure is of special diagnostic value in thosecases in which the scar assumes the form of a blind sac, inasmuch as its lateral portions are hidden by the remnant of themembrane (Fig. 197). Scars which extend over the posteriorhalf of the membrane are for a short time so strongly bulged bythe air-douche that the handle of the malleus is almost entirelycovered by this blister - like protrusion (see Politzer, Atlas,Plate XII, 22-27). The free cicatrices seldom occasion any striking disturbanceof hearing, and one is justified in attributing the deafness tothe cicatrix only if, after the bulging of the same by an air-.
