View E of Pontcysyllte aqueduct carrying a branch of the Shropshire Union Canal across the Dee Valley between Trevor & Froncysyllte, Wrexham, Wales, UK. Built 1795-1805 by Thomas Telford: the canal flows through an iron trough on 19 cast iron arches supported by hollow piers made of local stone & mortar mixed with bullocks' blood for extra strength. The ironwork was supplied by William Hazeldine from his foundries at Shrewsbury & nearby Cefn Mawr. The Llangollen Canal system was built in conjunction with William Jessop and completed 1808 with the construction of the Horseshoe Weir designed to provide a continuous supply of water for the aqueduct. The aqueduct & 11 miles of canal are a World Heritage Site within the Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The aqueduct is a Grade I Listed Building.
