Sailing westerly again, the next island reached is Umnak,in the interior of which smokes a lofty volcano. Twentymiles to the north of Umnak, the peak of Bogoslof towersabove the pale-green waters of Bering Sea. This islet isremarkable for having risen out of the ocean within thememory of living men. Beyond Umnak, islet succeeds islet for over six hundredmiles, far over toward Asia ; among these is Atka, where arehot springs, mud volcanoes and paint-pots fully equal tothose in the Yellowstone Park. Attu, the most westerly point of land where the Americanflag flies, is an island fifteen or twenty miles in extent, and ofvolcanic origin, like all the others of this long chain. It isinhabited by about a hundred hardy, honest-hearted Aleuts,and half-breeds of mixed native and Russian parentage, whosubsist by seal-hunting, fishing, and the propagation offoxes and domestic geese. They are .so honest and kind that no explorer or visitorneed have the least fear of going among them, alone andunarmed.
