False-colour transmission electron micrograph of an influenza virus (WSN strain) raised in the laboratory, but originally obtained from a human specimen. The roughly spherical particles measure 100 nanometres in diameter and contain glycoprotein spikes on their surfaces. The influenza viruses belong in a group known as the orthomyxoviruses. They cause an acute febrile illness and are of world-wide distribution. Magnification: x14,100 at 35mm size. blue and red version
