They disappeared into low-lying clouds, andwere next seen falling within the American lines, probably hit by ananti-aircraft shell, though there is no positive proof of this. Bothaviators were killed. Lieut. Emerson was buried in the cemeteryof the 104th Infantry, , at Vignot, France, north of Toul. He was the first Field Artillery Officer to be killed in action in thewar while flying for the Army. In recognition of this fact theAviation Field at Camp Jackson, , has been named EmersonField, by the War Department. [ 170 ]. * CYRIL M. ANGELL Second Lieutenant, , , Twelfth Aero Squadron Killed in action, May 14, 1918 Son of Thomas H. and Charlotte Angell, of Attleboro, Mass.; wasborn in Fall River, Mass., April 9, 1895. He attended the New-port High School, and graduated from the Fall River High School,and from He enlisted at Champaign, 111., in Aug., 1917, and trained at theUniv. of 111. School of Military Aeronautics. He was then attachedto the Royal Flying Corps, Squadron 83, training at Camp Mo-hawk, Deseronto, Can.; and later the School of Aerial Gun-nery, Hicks, Tex. He was commissioned 2d Lieut, in Aug., 1917. Lieut. Angell received overseas orders, and was stationed inFrance, first with the 147th Aero Squadron, ; then with the12th Aero Squadron, He was killed in action at Vignot,France, on May 14, 1918. Lieut. Angell was flying as pilot, accompanied by Lieut. W. K. , Jr., as artillery
